How Pop-up Illustration Books are Made for Kids
When you think about movies, you might also think about books at the same time. If you’ve watched a great film, you might later find out that it was adapted from an excellent book.
Books can give you many details that you won’t see in the movie that will make your imagination run wild. If you are a lover of film, then you may like 3D movies. It’s a great experience to have whatever is on the screen to seem like it’s jumping out towards you. But not many people know that there are books that have done similar things for a long time.
As a child, you’ve probably seen or even read one of these books. There are a lot of these books out there. You might also have one or two favorite pop-up books since the action in it jumps out towards you as soon as you turn its pages. These types of books are a part of a group of books that are called mechanical or movable books. Examples of mechanical books include pull-downs, pop-outs, pull-tabs, flaps, tunnel books, transformations. If you’ve seen a greeting card that appears three-dimensional, then that’s a mechanical book.
How Did It Start
The art known as paper engineering is where pop-up books came into existence. You might associate pop-up books with origami since they are both made from folding paper. Pop-up books are vastly different than origami. With pop-up books, you’ll be using scissors and glue with card stock, but with origami, you fold paper that you can easily fold. The first mechanical books weren’t designed for children, but they were meant for adults. The first mechanical books that were aimed at children’s entertainment were only first made in the eighteenth century.
Craftsmen with impressive skill were the ones who made the first mechanical books by hand. Over the years, the processes that these craftsmen went through have become automated thanks to machines. All over the world, pop-up books for children were becoming increasingly popular. Fairy tale books were getting pop-up features added to them by publishers with the intent to entertain children and get them to read more books. These days, almost a thousand pop-up books are created each year.
How the Pop-up Books Are Made
To make a pop-up book, they will need to plan it out carefully and have the right amount of skill. The first thing they’ll do is make a regular book. The next thing that happens once the story and art are complete is they get a paper engineer to evaluate what movable elements they should be putting in the book. Every paper engineer needs to be practical and have a great imagination since they’ll have to design a book that can be read repeatedly and still entertain the readers. They have to create movable elements that can be frequently used and still not break for a long time. They’ll be trying to figure out what to put where and how they should have it on the pages. Most pop-up books are still made by hand, even if modern machinery can create all the parts needed without failure.
